I recall feeling I had truly arrived in grown-up shoes the day I opened my closet to survey a tidy row of creamy neutrals and pastels on wood hangers: linen shirts, dresses, slacks, blazers—they were all there, obediently waiting to do my bidding in the heat of a Southern summer.
