Starting on Friday, people and pooches will flock to the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California, for the Dog Lover’s Festival, which kicks off the festivities that will culminate in the crowning of the World’s Ugliest Dog. Now in its 25th year at the Fair, the contest has actually been going on since the 1970s. But before you express righteous indignation and argue that all dogs are beautiful, keep in mind that this attitude is at the heart of the contest. It’s also important to note that there is a bigger issue at stake:

Many of the winners of the World’s Ugliest Dog® Contest go on to become ambassadors for the rescue dog movement. Their owners adopted them and gave them a great home and changed their lives forever. The organizers of the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest are proud to be associated with this effort. To showcase the dogs available for adoption in Sonoma County, each year the Sonoma-Marin Fair invites the Sonoma Humane Society and its “Tail Waggin” to the event. During the contest, we conduct the Beauty & the Beast Rescue walk in which adoptable dogs are walked through the crowd by Miss Sonoma County pageant contestants. These dogs and those in your shelter right now are looking for a forever home. As owners of contestants will testify, these are amazing dogs who bring a lot of love into their owner’s lives.
