The presence of a pet actually changes our brain chemistry.

Here’s a great story from NPR that delves into the science of why our pets makes us feel happier. Those of us who love dogs (and, okay, cats, horses, parrots, etc.) know that our lives are enriched by our relationships with them. But scientists are starting to understand why this is so:

More recently, says Rebecca Johnson, a nurse who heads the Research Center for Human/Animal Interaction at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine, studies have been focusing on the fact that interacting with animals can increase people’s level of the hormone oxytocin.

Fascinating stuff that’s worth a listen.
