The classic Lassie-style rescue scenario—the dog barks and someone says, “What are you trying to say, Lassie? Timmy fell down a well? Let’s go save him!”—has been the butt of jokes for decades. But here’s a remarkable, real-life example of a dog who ran and got help for his owner.

A 73-year-old man from Cornwall, Maurice Holder, was walking his Labradoodle, Monty, on a path alongside the River Camel, when the bank gave way, plunging the man 40 feet downward and into the water. Holder was knocked unconscious by the fall, and the water of the tidal river began to rise. When he awoke 15 minutes later, there was Monty, standing by his side. Once he realized that his owner had regained consciousness, the dog raced up the bank and to a local pub, where his barking alerted a good Samaritan, who then followed him back to Holder.

Holder suffered head injuries and six broken ribs, but it could have been much worse without heroic efforts of the fast-thinking, loyal dog.
