Rio’s Carnival Goes to the Dogs


Sunday’s parade in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, featured many dogs in costume.

Pretty much the only thing most Americans know about Rio de Janiero is that it hosts one of the world’s biggest parties every year when Carnival kicks off the weekend before Lent begins. Rio’s Carnival is known for its samba schools and incredible costumes, and this year’s event starts on Saturday. But before millions of people take to the streets, it’s a dog’s world. Last Sunday featured the annual Blocao—a play on the words for street party, “bloco,” and dog, or “cao”—a parade of dogs, many of whom are in costume.
