Texas Dog Dies in Hot Car, Owner Charged with Felony Cruelty

In a rather appalling show of callousness, a Texas man arrested for the death of his dog, which he had left in a parked car, is smiling and giving a thumbs-up in his mugshot. But I post this story not so we can criticize Bill Cody Omer (although he certainly deserves it), but to praise the Galveston Police Department, who seem to take animal welfare very seriously and are intent on prosecuting Omer to the full extent of the law. Omer will be charged with felony animal cruelty, and the bail required for his release was even set higher than normal.

I hope that, down the road, a judge throws the book at him as well. But for now, let’s just give the Galveston police their due. They were too late to save the dog, but they have done every thing they could in the aftermath of the tragedy.

The inappropriateness of Omer’s mugshot has caused the story to spread around the Web.
