The photos of Yun-Fei Tou are memento mori of dogs euthanized in Taiwan’s shelters.

To call attention to the plight of dogs in shelters and the inhumanity of killing strays, Taiwanese photographer Yun-Fei Tou takes photographic portraits which take on a whole new meaning when you learn when they were taken: right before the animals were euthanized. His goal is to make people face up to our disposable culture and the way we treat animals:

“I hope these images will arouse the viewers to contemplate and feel for these unfortunate lives, and understand the inhumanity we the society are putting them through.”

Although Tou says that he doesn’t believe in pet ownership at all (which is certainly something we disagree with), his message is an important one for all dog lovers. We must somehow convince people that our current system of over-producing dogs and then killing the extras is cruel and unsustainable. The portraits themselves have a stark, sad, beauty that goes right to the heart.

The intelligence in those eyes is heartbreaking, given the dog’s circumstances.
