Ohio Judge Gets Standing Ovation for Sentencing Man to Jail for Dogfighting

We’ve given the state of Ohio a lot of flak for its lax dog laws, but here’s one Buckeye State judge who isn’t going to let that stop her from meting out a proper punishment to a man convicted of dogfighting. Collin Rand had pleaded guilty to six counts of dogfighting, four counts of cruelty to animals, one count of drug trafficking, and one count of carrying a concealed weapon. Judge Kathleen Ann Sutula’s hands were somewhat tied when it came to sentencing because the felonies were not classified as “violent.” (Really? Dogfighting isn’t violent?) But she called him a “monster” and gave him the harshest possible sentence:

[S]ix months in jail, five years community control, and more than $12,000 in fines, restitution and court costs. Rand is never allowed to own a dog.
