Wow. We’ve posted many stories about people who perform incredible feats to save their dogs, but this one takes the cake: A 66-year-old Florida man actually wrestled a 7-foot alligator that was taking his West Highland Terrier to a watery grave. Steve Gustafson heard Bounce yelp, and when he turned to look, he saw the dog clenched in the gator’s jaws:
“For whatever reason, I don’t know, I just yelled, ‘you’re not going to get her!’ and just leaped on the gator…just like you do some silly belly flop in a pool,” the Iowa native said. “The only difference was I landed on top of a gator.”
Gustafson suffered just minor scraping and bruising, and Bounce escaped without injury. The alligator was trapped and removed from the area. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission doesn not recommend that people go after gators, but it’s hard to fault Gustafson, whose love for Bounce overcame his fear.
