We’ve all been there: you’re all dressed up for work or a special event, and your dog decides it’s the perfect time to shake itself dry. Splattered with water from head to toe, all you can do is laugh. But to a dog—as well as other furry mammals—the ability to shake dry evolved as an important survival skill. Scientists believe that a dog’s ability to immediately rid itself of some 70% of the water on its fur helps the animal avoid hypothermia, which can be deadly. That desire to shake off is hard-wired and is a mechanical wonder. And you thought the pup was just trying to be funny. . . .
