Lucia was discarded because of her condition, but now she’ll live out her days in a loving home.

Here’s a beautiful and heartwarming story about a terminally ill dog who was rescued from a Long Island shelter. Rather than summarize, I’ll let the hero of this tale tell her own story (from her Facebook page):

Lucia was brought to the NY CACC by her owners of 12 years of loyal ownership due to a large cancerous mass on her face. When I saw Lucia’s face in her intake photo, there was immediate connection.

My name is Erica and I’m a volunteer for Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Guardians of Rescue. There were literally hours left for gorgeous Lucia, and I had no idea what the process entailed of putting a hold on this dog. Thanks to MANY volunteers who stayed up late to help me learn some of the ropes and get into contact with the right people, Lucia’s life was spared. These are people I have never met before who came together and worked tirelessly to save a dog none of us had met. Those people alone restored my faith in the human race.

Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue, an organization that I have been a part of for 14 years, pulled her for me and arranged transport. I have a special place in my heart for special needs animals. My Pit Bull Tye (2 years old) is blind from birth and I have 2 one-eyed cats (along with many other furry kids).

I’m referring to this adoption as a “Hospice Adoption”. This means I will not be opting for major surgery for Lucia. I want her time on this earth to be comfortable and with as little pain as possible. Putting a 12 year old dog through a major surgery such as this would require months of recovery. Months she may not even have.

So Lucia is coming to me to enjoy days on the beach, many trips in the car (I pet sit for a living), and the best love and attention she can imagine. I want to change her life, even if only for a short time.

  1. God Bless you. Why is it that people are ready to “put down” terminally ill or old dogs before even trying to find them loving homes? These beautiful creatures NEED loving and care whatever amount of time they have left. Thank you for all you do for them.
