Since August, we’ve posted a couple times about a mystery dog virus that appeared in the area around Columbus, Ohio. (See here and here.) Now, however, dogs are getting sick and dying around Ann Arbor, Michigan, as well. Even scarier is that veterinarians believe that it could be dog owners who are making their pets ill:
How the disease is transmitted is unknown. But canines with the virus appear to also have owners who are sick.
“Traditionally we don’t pass viruses to our pets. This year, I think that there is potential that we are passing it to our pets,” said Dr. Ruland.
Sure enough, Pederson said she has not been feeling well since Sunday. “I’ve had this stomach pain that just comes, that’s right beneath my ribs,” she said.
Researchers still aren’t sure what the virus is, but it seems similar to a Circovirus that was identified in San Diego last year.
