The nominees for the 2016 American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards have been announced, and voting to determine the eight finalists is open. This is an annual campaign that recognizes heroes on both ends of the leash. The eight lucky finalists will be flown to Hollywood for a star-studded awards gala, which will air on Hallmark Channel later this fall. One of these incredible dogs will receive the grand prize American Hero Dog title.

Last year’s winner was Harley, who went from puppy-mill victim to a fundraising spokesdog to anti-puppy-mill causes. This year’s collection of finalists are therapy dogs, search-and-rescue dogs, service-dogs, and others who do incredible work to help people and other dogs.

In order to cultivate the next generation of hero dogs, American Humane Association will donate $2,500 to each of the eight finalist’s charity partners, and the American Hero Dog will win an additional $5,000 for their charity partner!
