Meet Pig, the Incredible “Half Dog”

Here’s the amazing story of one of the more incredible dogs you’ll ever see. Pig was born to a tray dog near Atlanta last fall, and her profound birth defects led veterinarians to recommend she be euthanized. However, when Kim Dillenbeck met the little dog, she bonded pig:

“Pretty quickly, I decided to be her mother because she probably wouldn’t live,” Dillenbeck said. “We assumed that by now, she would be suffocating under her own organs, or something like that, because of her shape.”

Long involved in animal rescue, Dillenbeck believed that if Pig were to die from her condition, she could handle it emotionally. She’s fostered sick dogs before and was with them when they died.

Remarkably, Pig survived, and despite some crazy anatomical oddities—she is missing part of her spine and several ribs; some of her vertebrae are fused and twisted; her spinal cord splits into two separate cords; and her hips and joints are in the wrong positions—she seems happy and in a loving home.

Who knows what the future holds, but for right now, Dillenbeck is giving Pig exactly what she needs.
