Charlene and Joseph Handrick started with ten dog, which is a lot, but not unheard of. But by the time authorities raided their home on June 3, there were an astounding 276 dogs on the property. Yesterday, at a court appearance in Howell, New Jersey, the couple were charged with 552 counts of animal cruelty–two for each dog–which could lead to extensive jail time and fines in excess of $1M. In addition, they could be forced to pay for veterinary care for all of the dogs.
Incredibly, the couple asked if they could get “three or four of their dogs back.” Authorities were understandably reluctant.
