After Hurricane Katrina left more than 250,000 pets stranded, animal lovers are clearly concerned about the fate of dogs in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, which ravaged the Northeast on Monday. Luckily, the region is home to many pet-friendly shelters:

“Up until actual storm conditions started, we had heard of literally hundreds of animal-friendly shelters opening,” said Niki Dawson, director of disaster services for the Humane Society of the United States. “Pets were either being welcomed at human shelters, or other resources were being provided if human shelters didn’t welcome pets.”

But there is still lots of rescuing to be done, and families who have lost everything may find it difficult to keep their pets. This is a situation that will be constantly changing. A story on the “Animal Tracks on Today” site does a good job of explaining the issues.
