Last year, when a vicious rampaging Bull Mastiff attacked a 10-year-old girl in the northern Serbian town Pancevo, a small Dachshund named Leo jumped to her defense. Through sheer will and bravery, Leo was able to hold off the other dog until young Nikolina Vucetic could get away, but Leo did not survive the encounter:
Now 12-years-old, Vucetic — who was left with scars from the incident — recalls the traumatizing experience as she walked home from a friend’s house. The girl says the guard dog came after her from behind, threw her to the ground, and grabbed her arm. Leo came to her rescue trying to get the larger dog off of her.
“I screamed and Leo rushed out barked and ran around, biting him on the leg. When the dog let go of me, he looked around and then stormed at Leo.”
Now a memorial, the first of its kind in Serbia, stands in a local park to pay tribute to Leo. Nikolina visits the memorial often and says she is glad that the dog who perhaps saved her life is being remembered for his bravery.
