Every once in awhile—admid the news of dogfighting rings and animal-cruelty charges—a story comes along that restores your faith in humanity. Here’s one of those.

Christina Summitt tends bar in a hotel in New Jersey, and the paw-print tattoo on her wrist is often a conversation starter. Recently, a customer asked about Summitt’s own dogs, and she confided that her Great Dane-black Labrador mix, Tucker, had just been through emergency surgery costing $2,700.

When she gave the customer his tab, she was astonished by what she saw when she picked it up again. . .
