We run into far too many of these stories: a decorated veteran was denied entry into a Circle K convenience store in Richland County, South Carolina, because he had his service dog with him. Showing remarkable ignorance, the clerk to him that “he didn’t look blind,” so the dog couldn’t be necessary. David Long suffers from PTSD from his military service, and his dog, Harry, helps him keep calm.
In this case, the police were called and were immediately on Long’s side of the argument, explaining to the clerk and her manager that Long could not be denied service. But for someone suffering from PTSD, confrontations such as this can be very damaging. Hopefully, we can continue to educate the public about the valuable services these hero dogs perform
