Video: Dusty the Volunteer Dog Is Volunteer of the Year

An 11-year-old Shih Tzu named Dusty was recently recognized as the March volunteer of the month at Johnson Memorial Health Services in Dawson, Minnesota. His job is simple: he shows love for the patients who are living or recuperating at the facility:

“I don’t know why I was lucky enough to have him pick me, but he did,” said Bonnie Hersom, a resident at Johnson Memorial.

For Hersom, the hours with Dusty make the recovery from a motorcycle accident a little easier. Dusty usually spends a few hours each day laying on her lap or by her side.

“I love having him come in and lay with me,” Hersom said.

She is paralyzed from the neck down and the dog gives her motivationto heal.

“Someday, I hope to be able to pet him,” Hersom said.

Even though Dusty’s owner, Diane Seefeld, only works part time at the hospital, Dusty still goes in on days when Seefeld stays home. His dedication to bringing comfort and joy to those in need is second to none.

  1. It is just an amazing story. I am a volunteer at the organization from my college and can tell for sure that each of us should gift love to someone who really needs it. I am working on the article for college paper and found a lot of useful information on this website that offers valuable information about volunteering. I hope I will be able to make people think more of help to all dogs.
