A Colorado man is alive today because his loyal Alaskan Husky, Juneau, refused to leave his side and then ran for help. Leonard Somers was skiing down Berthoud Pass in Colorado, with Juneau running alongside. On the last run of the day, with temperatures falling quickly, Somers fell into a ravine and landed on a frozen tree trunk, breaking his back. Lying there in the snow, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, Somers knew that his life hung in the balance. It would be up to Juneau to effect a rescue, and she was up to the task.
