For 137 years, the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show has been the premier pure-breed event in the United States. But this year, for the first time, mixed-breed dogs will also have a place. The Masters Agility Championship at Westminster will take place on Saturday, February 8, in New York City. The event will be open to “purebred dogs, mixed breeds registered in the AKC’s Canine Partners program, Miscellaneous breeds not yet eligible for conformation competition, Foundation Stock Service recorded breeds, and Purebred Alternative Listing dogs (purebred dogs that cannot be fully registered).”
This is a big step for mixed breeds. Let’s hope that it’s only a first step towards more inclusion at such events.
