Writing in The New York Times yesterday, Jan Hoffman explores how people go about naming their dogs, as she and her family ponder what to call their own new pup. Everywhere she turns, she finds tidbits of advice and “rules”—many of which are contradictory.

The article is accompanied by a video of Alexandra Horowitz, who studies dog cognition and behavior, interviewing folks about their dogs’ names. She has some interesting insights, such as that a name should be distinctive and should be something you will be willing to repeat a lot.
