Friday Fly-Fishing Film Festival 11.2.12

Welcome to another edition of the OrvisNews.com Friday Film Festival, in which we scour the Web for the best fly-fishing footage available. This week’s collection kicks off with another killer video from the Jensens, who never seem to run out of great New Zealand footage. After that, there’s a little of everything, for both fresh and salt lovers.

Periodically, I like to take stock of what you all like and don’t like about the videos you see here in the FFF, so I’m taking a poll. Of course, there will be an incentive, as well.

In the comments below, tell us two things you like AND two things you don’t like to see in these fly-fishing videos. Do you love the bluegrass but had the rap? Is thrity seconds of driving at the beginning a good set-up or a waste of your time? That kinda of thing. This feedback will help me better choose the videos you’ll love, and perhaps the filmmakers themselves will learn a thing or two. One commenter, randomly chosen, will win a copy of the “Sipping Dry” DVD from Sharptail Media. See you next week with a fresh set of films!

Dave and Amelia Jensen, of Fly Fish Alberta, have turned out their second amazing video about New Zealand in two weeks. I suppose it helps that they have hundreds of hours of videos from their travels to choose them. But I’m not jealous. . .nope. . .not me. Grr.

The Hunt for Chrome October from Mark 11 Photography on Vimeo.

Here’s some gorgeous footage from the Skeena watershed of British Columbia, featuring some sweet northern lights, to boot.

Good stuff from the Louisiana marshes, including some real slob redfish.

Monsters Inc. from Etienne Marier on Vimeo.

King salmon will put a serious tug on your line, as these young anglers found out on some Lake Ontario tribs. Dude’s rocking a sweet digicamo Orvis Sling Pack, too.

Brownilicious Daydream from Chris Cutler on Vimeo.

We don’t see too many fly-fishing videos that try to tell an actual story, complete with an appropriate soundtrack, so I give Chris Cutler a lot of credit. The fact that there are some killer browns here doesn’t hurt, either.

You like bass? Because Alvin Dedeaux knows where they live on the Colorado in Texas. Plenty of cool topwater action on display here.

a Vaders Helmet from Collin Carlson on Vimeo.

Winter trout fishing isn’t for everyone, but these guys make it look like a lot of fun, despite the frigid fingers. I think I could make that leap of faith at the beginning if I knew there were hungry rainbows waiting.

The Everglades backcountry offers a smorgasbord of species and cool fishing situations. These anglers found plenty of willing fish, and the video captures the whole day, from sunup to beers.

Precious Chrome from The Marble Trout on Vimeo.

Our favorite New York City filmmaker, and Orvis Yonkers fishing associate, heads up to catch steelhead in the wilds of Pulaski. That fish coming straight up out of the water at 2:48 is astonishing.

Albie Love from Robin Hill on Vimeo.

False albacore can beat you up, and these anglers get their fill. Just listen to that first fish tear off line!

This is a great wrap-up of a whole season of fly fishing, from the guys at Sweetwater in Montana. That sunset shot at the end is something to behold.

Autumn Red Series – Deep in the “In Between” from LC Journal (Doug Roland) on Vimeo.

More redfish goodness from South Carolina’s Low Country. These are not bull reds, which will come in later this month, but they still take savagely and fight hard.

Flats fishing carp style from Robin Hill on Vimeo.

Ooh. Twovideos in a single FFF is an impressive feat that not many have achieved, but Robin Hill has nailed it. Aside from chasing albies, the man obviously digs pursuing wary carp on the flats.

This is so cool: a couple of disabled anglers—The No-Handed Bandit and The One-Armed Swordsman—try Tenkara. They have some good luck and, it seems, a helluva good time. Ain’t fly fishing awesome? Have a great weekend!
