Welcome to another edition of the OrvisNews.com Friday Film Festival, in which we scour the Web for the best fly-fishing footage available. This week’s collection features great videos from Europe and the Americas, running the gamut from huge sailfish off the coast of Costa Rica, to Texas largemouths, to smallish “ugly” trout in Sweden. Every week, I think, “Surely we’re going to run out of great fly-fishing video one of these days,” but the quality stuff keeps coming in from around the world. Soon, we’ll begin the shift to the Southern Hemisphere, so look for the Kiwis, Aussies, and South Americans to start coming on strong. Remember, we surf so you don’t have to. But if you do stumble upon something great that you think is worthy of inclusion in a future FFF, please post it in the comments below. See you next week with a fresh set of films!
We kick things off with a really beautiful video about a trip into the Colorado high country to catch greenback cutthroat trout. Not only is the scenery stunning, but the filmmaking is top-notch, as well. Check out the cool shot at about 5:00, when you see a trout strike a dry fly from an underwater perspective.
Here’s another cool trailer for The Costa Rica Challenge, a film that follows a group of anglers as they try to fish their way across this Central American nation, catching tarpon from the Atlantic, machaca from the interior, and sailfish from the Pacific…all in 36 hours. “The silver king is about to bow to the beard.”
French fly-fishing filmmakers have been on a tear of late, and this video offers fabulous footage of casting for trout and grayling. Plenty of underwater footage adds to the experience. Tres bon.
Politics aside, the fly-fishing off Cuba looks simply amazing. This video is listed as a teaser, but it doesn’t say for what. Who cares? The hot Grand Slam action here will make you wonder if the country should be known for more than its cigars.
Okay warmwater fanatics: this one’s for you. Not many bass-fishing videos offer underwater shots, so it’s a treat to see them here. There are plenty of great hookups and a soundtrack that adds a Southwestern feel to this day on the water from the Lone Star State.
The gang from frontsidefly.com is back, with a new adventure to a river they know nothing about. Rolf is behind the camera and narrating, while Stefan casts to several “ugly” trout. But the boys must be careful that they don’t offend the Mayfly God, or else. . .
We end with a short video that contains no fish, just a stunning location and a moment between an angler and a swan that’s a reminder of how important it is to embrace the whole experience, not just the catch. Have a great weekend!
