I’ve been to the World Fly Fishing Championshipin England in 2000and it is a pretty formal affair, with gala dinners and lots of rules and regulations. But I’m guessing that things are going to be a lot more wild and fun at the inaugural Lake Henshaw Carp on the Fly Warm Water Throw Down on June 23. (You’ve got to love any event in which the Rules page ends with “LOL.”)
Hosted by Conway Bowman, star of “Flyfishing the World,” and Al Quattrochi, founder of the One Surf Fly Beach Classic, the event will be held on Lake Henshaw, northeast of San Diego.
If you like casting for golden bones, or even if you’ve never caught one before, you can try to win the coveted “Kentucky Bone” trophy, which apparently comes with “serious bragging rights and should never be taken lightly.” There are divisions for both wading and boat anglers, with the the winners determined by the combined length of their top five fish. The competition, the competitors, the fish, and the location all seem like a blast, so if you’re in striking distance of SoCal, get thee to the Throw Down.
