The Friday Hot List is Back! The Orvis Fishing Reports and Conditions pages offer up-to-date reports, including stream and river flows, tides, recommended flies and equipment, and special fishing tips. At any given time, those waters that offer the very best fishing become part of the “Red Hot” list. To ensure that those making the reports aren’t exaggerating the quality of their local fishing, each reporter is allowed only four red hots per year per location, so they only rank their spot red hot when it’s truly outstanding. Every Friday, we’ll highlight those waters that offer the best fishing for the weekend.

1. San Juan River, New Mexico

“The midge hatch has been epic!” announces Chris Taylor, of Fishheads of the San Juan. “I am seeing large clusters from 10:00am till 4:00pm! The best fishing will be with midge pupae and larvae, size 22 and 24, and clusters are working well. You can find fish eating midges of all colors, but dark midges (black, brown, dark gray and olive) have been best. Some fish have been eating cream, as well. Try fishing BWO’s from 11:00am to about 3:00pm. Dark brown and olive have been the best colors in a size 22 and 24.”

He doesn’t have a rod yet… what a better time to get some hands on instruction and to try out a couple of Orvis rods.

i purchased the Access rod outfit a while ago, but I don’t think my dad is quite ready to commit to that level. I’m guessing he might end up with the Clearwater outfit.
