We first posted about young Matthew Owen back in March, when one of his fishing mentors wrote about how Matthew was honoring his late father by continuing to develop as an angler. Then, earlier this month, one of Matthew’s classmates wrote an essay nominating Matthew for Trout Bum of the Week. Now, we receive word that, because of his accomplishments, the young man has received a full scholarship to attend the Lillard Fly Fishing Colorado Rocky Mountain Fly Fishing Expedition this summer.
In an email, Will Lillard wrote:
Lillard Fly-Fishing Expeditions is a combination of environmental education, fly fishing, and backpacking for teenagers. We lead 12-17 day fly fishing camps in NC and CO. The trips also include 10-20 hours of community service with local TU chapters and other nonprofit conservation organizations.
This summer I have awarded a full scholarship for Matthew Owen. I first read about Matthew on the Orvis Blog. When I read about his love of fly fishing, and all he has had to endeavor, offering him a scholarship was the least I could do. I am happy to announce that Matthew will be joining our Colorado Rocky Mountain Fly Fishing Expedition this summer. I know he is going to love it, and it will help him to grow as the young ambassador our sport/environment needs.
For anyone else interested in this kind of expedition for a teenager, Will says there’s one spot left in his Blue Ridge Adventure Academy (June 17-30). He’s willing to offer a 50% discount ($1,250 off for a 12-day backcountry fly-fishing camp) to an OrvisNews.com reader. The camp is for kids entering grades 8 through 11. If you’re interested, email Will Lillard to find out more.
Congrats to Matthew, and we hope to hear all about his Rocky Mountain adventure.
