Video: Catching Murray Cod on the Fly is “Child’s Play”

Child’s Play from Nicholas Kneipp on Vimeo.

In the streams of the New England region of Australia, in the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales, Nick Kneipp chases Murray cod on the fly. Since we started featuring Nick’s videos here, I have become a bit obsessed with the species. The savage strike and brutal tug of war that ensues pack a lot of excitement into a short time. These fish are even more impressive when you learn that Nick uses a 10-weight rod. A just-hooked Murray cod puts a fierce bend in that big stick.

In this video, Nick takes his daughter, Leah, out on the water with him, and she’s clearly impressed:

It’s great to watch your kids grow up, developing their own interests and hobbies. My youngest daughter Leah has a real passion for photography and fly tying, and she now has the wackiest collection of fly’s out there—bold, bright colours with pink featured in most of her favoured ones. On my latest voyage, Leah tagged along to see what all the fuss was about. . . .We both shared a great day on the water, landing 11 Murray cod on fly and dropping several others. Leah was disappointed at losing her first cod, but I suspect she won’t have to wait long for the next opportunity.
