Not bad for an angler’s very first Atlantic salmon!
[Editor’s note: My friend John Bleh is part of our Sunday-morning old-man soccer game in Manchester, Vermont, and he sent me this great picture from a recent trip to Norway.]
My first time out for Atlantic salmon, I was fortunate enough to be at the Norwegian Flyfishers Club near Trondheim, Norway. Low-water conditions kept many fish stuck in the fjord, waiting for rain, but they made my job of learning two-handed casting and covering water a lot easier. Some key instructions from the guide on casting technique and the trick of hook setting (drop the loop, John!) finally led me to my first Atlantic salmon, a 12-pound beauty.
