Friday Fly-Fishing Film Festival 02.01.13

Welcome to another edition of the Friday Film Festival, in which we scour the Web for the best fly-fishing footage available. This week’s collection is an odd mixture, without some of the regular players, and because of some pressing business I’ve been forced to keep the captions extra short. But there’s still plenty of hot angling action for species as diverse as brook trout, mahi mahi, and tararira. (Say, what, now?) Strangely enough, when I’d expect to see a tone of entrants from New Zealand and other South American hotspots, instead we’ve got two Iceland video, as well as some Alaska rainbow footage from the Kenai. Remember, we surf so you don’t have to. But if you do stumble upon something great that you think is worthy of inclusion in a future FFF, please post it in the comments below. See you next week with a fresh set of films!

8am Monday Meeting from Ryan Griffin on Vimeo.

I’m pretty sure that this is a Monday-morning meeting none of us would be late for.

Fly fishing Tarariras – Argentina – Fly dreamers from Fly dreamers on Vimeo.

This is so cool: fly fishing for tarariras in huge weed beds in Argentina. The strikes are savage, and the fish are prehistoric-looking, like a cross between a golden dorado and a taimen.

Cabin Fever from Ohio Steelhead Drifters on Vimeo.

What better way to cure cabin fever than to cut together some of your favorite angling memories of the previous year? From Great Lakes steelhead to Montana’s Smith River, it looks like 2012 was a good one. The shot of the dog at :35 is worth the price of admission here.

Wading Turks from Badfish Angling on Vimeo.

Turks and Caicos doesn’t get a lot of press as an angling destination, but this DIY angler found plenty to keep him occupied.

High Country Brookies from The Fish Fly on Vimeo.

Regular blog readers know how I love the brook trout, and these guys are catching some pigs in the Colorado high country. I hope that it was a grueling hike to get to such amazing waters.

The Land of Ice and Salmon from Torkjel Landås on Vimeo.

I don’t often include videos that feature a lot of still photography, but this one’s from Iceland so I don’t mind as much. There’s lots to like here.

I can’t, won’t and don’t stop. from My Leaky Waders on Vimeo.

Appalachian anglers don’t spend a lot of time worrying about big fish. Instead, it’s a small stream game, often involving some serious mountaineering skills to clamber up the steep creeks.

Here’s some sweet footage from Iceland. Lots of great scenery, hookups, and pretty fish. Iceland is definitely in the top 5 dreams destinations for me.

Fly Fishing for Striped Marlin, Cabo San Lucas Mexico from Hopper-Stone Outfitters on Vimeo.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve certainly never seen a double-header on marlin before. I can’t even imagine the amount of adrenaline coursing through the veins of everyone on that boat.

Just a minute and a half focused on the simple pleasures of fly fishing. The cinematography is lovely, but I should warn you that there are, in fact, no actual fish in this video.

DesertSportsman Lees Ferry Trip Day 1 2012 from desertsportsman on Vimeo.

Here’s a cool look at the manmade desert fishery at Lees Ferry on the Colorado River. It’s obviously incredibly prolific, as the shot of a school of rainbows attests.

I’m not sure we’ve ever featured a video focused solely on mahi mahi, but here’s some killer action from Okinawa, Japan. Watching the fish keep slashing at the fly with no hookup is heart-wrenching, but there’s vindication in the end.

the east coast from Taylor on Vimeo.

As a lifelong East Coaster, I have suffered a certain amount of trout envy when I see the pictures and videos coming from the West. But these guys embrace their home waters and catch some killer trout in the process. However, the amount of whoopin’, hollerin’, and high-fivin’ here might be considered excessive.

Here’s a couple minutes of Arkansas goodness. No huge fish but some really pretty underwater shots of trout.

You gotta love a guy who is man enough to upload an entire video of missed fish. Thanks for this: we’ve all been there, and it’s a good reminder of how big a part failure plays in the entire fly-fishing experience.

Marsh Donkeys from Road Jack Productions on Vimeo.

This video is all about big redfish and a pumping sountrack. There’s a little genre-jumping, as far as the music goes, but it all seems to work together. It looks like these guys know how to have a good time.

Yeah, sure, this is an advertisement for an outfitter, but there’s no getting around the fact that those are just some jumbo rainbow trout. Some of those beasts look like salmon.

O2NATOS Croatia 2010 Fly Fishing from o2natos on Vimeo.

Finally, here’s some great footage from Croatia, featuring beautiful rivers and some nice grayling and trout. Have a great weekend!
