Welcome to another edition of the OrvisNews.com Friday Film Festival, in which we scour the Web for the best fly-fishing footage available. This week’s collection is another super salty group, with great action from Florida, Texas, the Middle East, and the Low Country. But there’s also plenty for both the trout guys and fans of the exotic.
This year’s crop of winter-fishing videos from around the country has been pretty spectacular, frankly. But if I had to choose between freezing my butt off in Wyoming or wearing shorts while casting for tigerfish or golden dorado, I think I’d choose the latter. Many of the videos this week are beautifully shot, so please watch them a full-screen and in high-definition. Remember, we surf so you don’t have to. But if you do stumble upon something great that you think is worthy of inclusion in a future FFF, please post it in the comments below. See you next week with a fresh set of films!
5th Season Treason from Tatrofish Films on Vimeo.
While the soundtrack to this one might give you a seizure, it features some cool footage from the Vail Valley of Colorado. When Mother nature dumps a foot of snow, everyone’s supposed to head for the slopes, but these guys have a better idea.
David Mangum of
Shallow Water Expeditions is back with more killer redfish footage, this time from his home state of Florida. Just gorgeous images and nail-biting action.
A seven-pound brown is plenty exciting, but add that it’s on a dry fly, and I’m all-in. The cicada hatch in New Zealand must be amazing to see.
There aren’t many fish here, and no big ones, but the video follows two anglers on an expedition to the Middle East to catch yellow permit. It’s a lot of fun, and the joy upon finally landing one of these elusive fish is apparent.
From Eastern Europe, this is a cool video featuring characters called Leechzilla and BalkanBoy, and they fish and taunt each other. Warning: A bit of NSFW language here.
Lowcountry Sunday School (extended version) from Ryan Griffin on Vimeo.
A couple weeks ago we featured a video called “Striking Out” by Ryan Griffin, but he’s back with some serious hits from the Low Country. Watch until the end for a safety lesson on the cooler-as-platform
The Barotse Floodplain is one of Africa’s great wetlands, on the Zambezi River in the Western Province of Zambia. There are big tigerfish there, as you will see. I love the way these fish go airborne so quickly upon being hooked.
I dig the jazzy vibe of this video about one man and his quest for trout in Finland (I think). As far as self-shot videos go, this is some great footage, and that’s a sweet fish at the end.
Octoberhoot from Casting Tales on Vimeo.
By now, it should be no secret to you that the guys at
Skinny Water Culture know how to have a good time. Here, they trek to Texas’s Padre Island National Seashore for a little fishing, camping, and dolphin rescue.
Argentina’s analog to the tigerfish is the golden dorado, and this video features some killer action for these acrobatic slabs of gold. Sometimes, as you’ll see, the fish win.
The balletic aspects of Spey-casting for steelhead are certainly on display here, as anglers on the Olympic Peninsula swing for steelhead. The shots of the line ripping off the water are fantastic.
Here’s some good stuff from the Rio Grande in New Mexico . . . although I can’t hear that song without thinking of
this amazing video that has nothing to do with fly fishing.
Low-tide fishing for redfish in the marshes on Florida’s east coast looks like a blast. A kayak offers access to countless backwaters and grass beds, where the fish are looking to gorge themselves.
A good fishing buddy is worth his weight in gold. . .or, as in this case, golden. Aside from some sweet warmwater catches, this video features a great relationship between an angler and his dog.
Oasis from D Loop Media on Vimeo.
Wyoming in winter is an unforgiving climate, but the fish are still there, and they still gotta eat. Anglers willing to battle wind burn and freezing fly line can regain sanity through the tug of an aggressive rainbow still willing to chase down a big streamer.
Finally, there’s another fly-fishing Harlem Shake video making the rounds today, but for my money, this is the cream of the crop. Ronald McDonald and a chicken in the hizzee! Have a great weekend!
