First Casts 01.23.13

Fly Life Mag 3

[Editor’s Note: “First Casts” is a regular feature that highlights great fly-fishing content from around the Web—from how-to articles, to photo essays, to interesting reads.]

  • A digital issue of the great magazine FlyLife, which covers Australia and New Zealand, is now online. Plenty of great articles and photography.
  • If you’re interested in the story behind the Hank Patterson phenomenon, the Bellingham Herald offers a profile of the “real” Hank and Reece.
  • On his blog The Featherbender, Barry Ord Clarke offers some excellent tips for creating a deer-hair “dubbing loop” and and creating a tight body of spun deer-hair. His method of protecting the hair during the whip-finish is particularly ingenious. (Hat tip: Midcurrent)
  • The Miami Herald features an article by Susan Cocking describing the a new method for weighing tarpon, which is said to be less harmful to the fish.
  • Months of anxious waiting for the winter steelhead run are over, and there are some great pictures of newly arrived chrome in the Oregon’s Rogue Valley on the Southern Oregon Fishing site.
  • Finally, my friend Carter Andrews has a great article about catching tuna on the fly on the Fly Fishing in Salt Waters site.
