Welcome to another edition of the OrvisNews.com Friday Film Festival, in which we scour the Web for the best fly-fishing footage available. This week’s collection has plenty of saltwater action, featuring films from North Carolina, the Seychelles, and even Angola. In one of these videos, you’ll learn why you don’t want a jumping tarpon next to the boat. For freshwater aficionados, we’ve got great stuff from Russia, Iceland, and around the U.S. For best results, watch these at the highest resolution available and at full-screen. Remember, we surf so you don’t have to. But if you do stumble upon something great that you think is worthy of inclusion in a future FFF, please post it in the comments below. See you next week with a fresh set of films!
“Home” Fall Steelhead Fly Fishing from Evolution Anglers on Vimeo.
We kick things off with a group of buddies on a steelheead trip somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. The video has a homey, comfortable vibe that’s lacking in some of the more “extreme” productions, and you really feel like you’re along for the ride.
The Bandersnatch of Harkers Island from My Leaky Waders on Vimeo.
In case you were wondering, here’s a definition, via Wikipedia: “A Bandersnatch is a fictional creature from Lewis Carroll’s 1872 novel Through the Looking-Glass and 1874 poem ‘The Hunting of the Snark’.” What this has to do with false albacore, I don’t know, but I like the video anyway.
Voice of the River from Maks Roslovtsev on Vimeo.
There’s not much fly fishing in this film from northern Russia, but anyone who has spent time on rivers and streams will love this evocative look at moving water.
From our friend Grant Wiswell at Castaway Films comes this cool look at fly fishing in the Seychelles, off the coast of East Africa in the Indian Ocean. Judging from this film alone, there’s a plethora of species available, from giant trevally to bonefish to things I can’t name. Just watch out for that eel!
I chose this video for the opening shot alone, which looks like something out of a Peter Jackson movie. There’s very little in the way of editing, soundtrack, etc. in this film, but the landscape of Iceland and the gorgeous trout more than make up for it. At this point, I think Iceland may be #1 on my “bucket list.”
A few months ago, we featured an R.A. Beattie film that was nothing but strikes, and here’s a similar production. I mean, why not just edit everything down to the single most exciting instant of the fishing experience?
Flyfishing for Tarpon and Dorado in Angola from Profiske on Vimeo.
It’s always great to add a new country to the FFF list, and here’s some cool tarpon and dorado action from Angola, in southern West Africa. No matter where these fish live, apparently, they like to get airborne. But rarely do you see a tarpon jump right over the boat.
Fly Fishing from Kyle Walcott on Vimeo.
This video was shot on Memorial Day, when some veterans took to the water, thanks to Rivers of Recovery. The angler certainly doesn’t let his disability get in the way of a good time. Have a great weekend!
