Friday Fly-Fishing Film Festival 01.10.14

Welcome to a new edition of the Orvis News Friday Fly-Fishing Film Festiva, in which we scour the Web for the best fly-fishing videos available. We have a great selection this week, twenty videos that will take you from Northern Canada to New Zealand, France to California. There is a plethora of species on display, but not much in the way of salt water. Let’s see those bonefish, permit, and tarpon videos, folks!

For best results, watch all videos at full-screen and in high definition. Remember, we surf so you don’t have to. We kick things off with a weird but fascinating piece of filmmaking from Australia, where Stu Murphy has shot some cool footage in the Orara River. It starts of pretty normal but moves into David Lynch territory in the second half.

This advertisement from Telluride Tourism is also a sweet little video about the joys of winter fly fishing. It’s beautifully shot.

If you’re casting from the bow of a flats boat in the middle of the high desert, it probably ain’t bonefish you’re after.

I’m not sure if we’ve ever featured a barracuda-only video before, so it seemed right to include this one.

Nunavut is the largest, northernmost and newest territory of Canada. It’s also a killer place to chase colorful arctic char.

For those of you Trivia Challenge takers who claimed that the Trinity River is in Texas, here’s the real fly-fishing river of that name—home to some sweet steelhead. Warning: earworm.

The folks at Tatrofish Films take their editing software pretty seriously. Great quote from the description: ” Apparently if you mix the right amount of stupidity with the correct amount of stubbornness and even less luck, you can actually bring a few fish to the net.”

Is this the first tarpon video set to a Bjork soundtrack ever? Perhaps. But it also gives you a great look at the last thing many baitfish ever see.

Small-stream lovers rejoice. Here’s a little taste of why we chase the dinks.

Northern Canada isn’t the only place with great char fishing. Check out what looks to be a fantastic trip to Greenland. The scenery looks a lot better, as well.

The quality of this video is pretty low, but it shows something we’ve never seen before: carp eating poppers off the surface. There are plenty of swings and misses, but the hookups are explosive.

We don’t get enough smallmouth videos, and since I love the species, I feel obligated to include those few productions that show up. A few real beauties on display here.

Our favorite French filmmakers have produced an impressionistic little video that’s quite lovely. Just three minutes of cool visuals and gorgeous music.

The River Itchen is one of England’s most storied streams, and here’s a year-end wrap-up of the ultra “civilized” fishing that goes on there. Some nice trout takes and pretty fish in this one.

You have to pay $4 to watch the entire 79-minute feature of “Kiss the Water,” but you probably want to after watching this beautiful trailer.

We finish up with four long videos you might want to save for the weekend. First up is 11 minutes of pike fishing in Finland with the Cold Reeds team.

Next up is a 16-minute solo journey with Trapper Rudd to the little known Atoll of Banco Chinchorro off the coast of Mexico for various inshore saltwater species.

We featured the trailer for the Burgundy Collective’s “When Winter Ends” a couple months ago, and here’s the full 18-minute film, featuring professional skier John Spiggs switching from winter fun to fly fishing.

Finally, we finish up with an episode of “Chasing Waters,” in which the Toad Fly Crew meets up with Mike Ward of Adipose Boatworks in Rockport, Texas for a little fun on the fly in the salt.
