Welcome to a new edition of the Orvis News Friday Fly-Fishing Film Festival, in which we scour the Web for the best fly-fishing videos available. We have a great selection this week, seventeen videos focused on the Northern Hemisphere and mostly from North America. Interesting that there’s just one from New Zealand, Argentina, or elsewhere under the summer sun.
If you are interested in traveling to a dream destination like some of those shown here, don’t forget to enter our Orvis Adventures contest!
For best results, watch all videos at full-screen and in high definition. Remember, we surf so you don’t have to. But if you do stumble upon something great that you think is worthy of inclusion in a future F5, please post it in the comments below, and we’ll take a look. And don’t forget to check in regularly at The Tug, the Orvis online video theater. See you next week with a fresh set of films!
We kick things off with the latest offering from Todd Moen of Catch Magazine, who explores why anglers become obsessed with fly-fishing for winter steelhead, among the toughest quarry that swims.
This is for anyone who missed this video yesterday, a stunning piece of footage of a once-in-a-lifetime event.
Fishing manager of Orvis Woodbridge (VA), Duber winters loves tropical fishing, and this shorty from a recent trip to El Pescador in Belize shows why.
Here’s a little gem from filmmaker RA Beattie that even in late fall, there’s magic on the river. I love the shot of the mayflies on the water.
Here’s some beautiful video from the bonefish flats of South Andros Island in The Bahamas, perfectly paired with the grooves of Kurt Vile.
From Arkansas comes from some rainbow-trout goodness featuring guide Jamie Rouse and friends. There’s some cool editing and effects on display here, as well as Jamie’s fearsome beard.
Putting together these festivals over the past few years has really opened my eyes about the angling in Scandinavia. Here’s a cool little short from the Nordic Fly Fishing Association, which drives that point home.
Recent Trout Bum of the Week and Falcon’s Ledge fishing manager Spencer Higa put together this video of his guide pals Jeff Lindstrom and Bryan Eldredge rocking some winter trout in Utah.
Check out this fun baby-tarpon action from Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. One wonders what kinds of sounds are coming out of that black VW Bug.
Philip from Norway loves three things: fly tying, fly fishing, and the Green Moose. This beautifully lit lifestyle video features all three. I just wish he wouldn’t put that fish on the ground (although I assume he took it home).
Sometimes, especially in winter, a guy just needs to get out on the water and away from everyday life. Luckily, Carl Beideman lives in Montana, which offers plenty of opportunity.
Here’s a wintertime fly-fishing adventure in and around Charleston, South Carolina, chasing schooled redfish. It’s about the fish, friends and the adventures that create stories along with it.
This one is all about perspective. Get a bird’s-eye view of some anglers floating and fishing down Washington’s Yakima River.
While the filmmaking is amateurish here, Dan Black gets the atmosphere perfect, capturing the solo winter experience on a Colorado stream.
I’m looking forward to this documentary about the Huchen, or Danube salmon. It’s always been a mysterious species.
Although we call this the fly-fishing film festival, sometimes it’s good to be reminded that, for many, angling is just one facet of a much more varied sporting life. This video puts fishing in context with hunting, hiking, and just enjoying the joys of being outside in nature.

Phil, thanks for posting my video twice!
In a word: “D’oh! (Is that two words?) Anyway, I fixed it.
I am really not understanding the correlation between catch and release fishing and blast and kill duck hunting and yes, I am from California. Thanks again for the videos, more fish, less hunting unless it is with a camera please.
Truly enjoyed Winter Run by Todd Moen!
Thank you Phil, for getting us through the New England winter with strong content and ultra-tasty videos.
(Enjoy the weekly quiz also; gonna win some day.)
Makes me long for summer to roll around here in Oregon.
