Friday Fly-Fishing Film Festival 01.11.13

Welcome to another edition of the OrvisNews.com Friday Fly-Fishing Film Festival (F5), in which we scour the Web for the best fly-fishing footage available. This week’s collection offers some of the most gorgeous footage we’ve ever shown. The quality of the newer cameras is definitely raising the bar for fly-fishing filmmakers. Suddenly, shots of moving water and landscape are as compelling as the fish themselves. There are quite a few stunning scenes sprinkled throughout all the videos below.

As usual, we cover quite a bit of ground, geographically speaking, with the folks in New Zealand coming in quite frequently. But there are also looks at Kamchatka, Europe (including Lithuania, which is a first), as well as the USA and Canada.

Remember, we surf so you don’t have to. But if you do stumble upon something great that you think is worthy of inclusion in a future FFF, please post it in the comments below. See you next week with a fresh set of films!

A SLOW MORNING from SHALLOW WATER EXPEDITIONS on Vimeo.

We kick things off with a sweet little clip from our pal David Mangum, of Shallow Water Expeditions, who heads out on the water chasing redfish. He’s also taking the cinematography of fly-fishing video to new heights, methinks.

Slow and Steady from Tobin Sanson on Vimeo.

Continuing our “slow” theme, here’s more beautiful stuff, this time from Colorado. Never has winter fly fishing looked so good.

TRAILER for: Cuba-“Frozen in Time” from Scott Gibney on Vimeo.

Cuba is known for its incredible inshore fly fishing, and this trailer for an upcoming film shows that off. But there’s also an interesting view of the Cuban culture, which seems frozen in time.

Small stream delights from Geir Sogn-Grundvåg on Vimeo.

Two of my favorite fly-fishing things come together here: small streams and New Zealand. According to the filmmaker, they landed just two fish on this day, but it was worth it.

I want to catch a golden dorado in the worst way. Here’s a clip from “Wild on the Fly” in which they explore the waters of northern Argentina. Ignore the advertising and enjoy these amazing game fish.

Here’s another great winter fly-fishing video. It looks cold, but the winter light really makes the rainbows’ colors pop.

Losing a Big One from Bobby Izuta on Vimeo.

This is the kind of thing that could haunt an angler, but Bobby Izuta chose to memorialize it in video. The take happens right at the beginning, so be ready for it. That’s a big trout.

Eight permit in four days is a pretty remarkable record, so I don’t blame this guy for bragging a bit. I would, too. Although it’s mostly POV GoPro stuff, there are some nice underwater shots here, as well.

Fishing with Sven from Nick Didlick on Vimeo.

The beauty and loneliness of steelheading are captured nicely here, along with plenty of wildlife and a few nice fish.

The Best of Kamchatka 2012 from Will Blair on Vimeo.

The stuff of dreams, fly fishing in Kamchatka seems otherworldly. Yes, this is an ad, but it contains lots of great shots of big rainbows, so I’ll allow it.

Hunting with Thor from Torkjel Landås on Vimeo.

Do you like your fly-fishing video served with a side order of Norse mythology? Yeah, I thought you did. Lots of action, both good and bad, included here. I’m assuming that this is shot in New Zealand, but I’m open to correction.

Rainbow Love from chroniclesofcod on Vimeo.

Here’s a quick clip that focuses on just the good stuff. It’s a minute and a half of sheer joy. And it’s not every day you get a Smashing Pumpkins soundtrack to go with it.

Quickie II from Chris Lewis on Vimeo.

Chris Lewis of Skinny Water Culture is becoming somewhat of a regular here. Plus, I think that this might be the first F5 video to focus solely on catching the wily and elusive sheepshead.

Capturing a Dragon- Musky on the Fly from ReviveFFP on Vimeo.

Let’s take a trip to Tennessee musky country. These guys claim that they had no idea what they were doing, but they managed to stab a dragon anyway. Good for them.

FSHN ain’t OVR #wintercountdown from Norman Maktima on Vimeo.

Still more winter goodness from guide Norman Maktima, who is also on Fly Fishing Team U.S.A., so he’s clearly got chops.

flyfishing for blackbass on Sardegna from Lutz Weidler on Vimeo.

We’ve posted videos of fly-fishing for bass in France before, but this is the first time I’ve heard of largemouths in Italy. He’s fishing Lake Coghinas on the island of Sardinia, former site of the Olympic Hide and Seek champion.

That NW Move – HD TEASER from Fishpedition on Vimeo.

If you always picture Pacific Northwest steelheading as a dark and dreary endeavor, then you’ll love this trailer for an upcoming video called “That NW Move.”

The New Zealanders have really stepped it up a notch lately, with plenty of killer footage. This video lets you feel what it’s like to be guided by a Kiwi angler.

Swedish Lapland, Vol. 3 – Laponia (Trailer, English) from Fly Fishing Films on Vimeo.

Finally, here’s a long video about fly fishing in Swedish Lapland. Gunnar Westrin and Palle Andersson encounter the mighty mountains of Laponia, a World Heritage site. In the shadow of Mount Ahkká, they cast for shy char and aggressive trout.Have a great weekend!
