Enter Our Fly Tying Contest and Get Your Fly into the Orvis Catalog!

It’s winter.

Time to build a fire, grab a beverage of your choice, and sit down at the bench to tie one that will catch fish.

Here at Orvis, it’s the time of year where we celebrate fly tying, from Fly Tying 101 courses at our stores (find one near you), to showcasing new materials on the blog, to podcasts featuring noted tiers and their patterns.

And this year we want to showcase you.

Starting today, January 13, through February 14 you can enter our Fly Tying Contest on Instagram. We’re looking for an original creation, a fly straight from your brain banana to the vice that we can put in our Orvis Fly Fishing Catalog.

Post a photo of your original fly on Instagram tagged with #OrvisFlyTying and you’re entered.

Our own Shawn Brillion and Tom Rosenbauer will judge the entries on fish and angler appeal.

The prizes are as follows:

First prize is your fly featured here in the Orvis Fly Fishing Catalog.

Second prize is a new Renzetti Vise.

Third prize is a signed copy of The Orvis Fly-Tying Guide.

Once again, the contest begins today January 13, 2015 and runs through February 14, 2015 until 11:59p.m. EDT. Good luck!

  3. Question about the 1st place prize of having your fly in the Orvis catalog. Does the winner get royalties from the sale of their fly? If so that’s a contest worth entering, if not why enter so Orvis can profit of our designs?

    1. Hi Tony,

Of course the winner gets the royalty payments from sales of their fly pattern. But trust me: it’s not enough to let you quit your day job.

      1. It would be nice to know what the royalty percentage is since all other fly production companies allow you to submit fly patterns year round & list what they pay in royalties.

  4. I have a winning pattern for the Orvis fly catalog. Would it be possible for me to receive payment in the form of a Loomis NRX saltwater fly rod (8 wt)?

  5. Tony, we would certainly notify the winner of the percentage.

Christian, post your instagram name and I can look into it.

  6. My son (16) would like to enter the contest. Since I believe 18 is the age of majority in PA does this disqualify him from being able to make a legal contract? If so can a parent sign the legal contract? I would like him to enter his fly without worry of disqualification. Thank you.

  7. Seriously I know there was a crap load of entries but it’s and I don’t envy the job of choosing the winners but all we have heard is next week, later this week, and this week for over 3 weeks. Still nothing.

  8. Yes. This one is on us. With the number of entries (they are very, very good) combined with travel schedules it has taken much longer than anticipated and our apologies for the wait. We’ll have an announcement by tomorrow. Thanks again for your patience all!
