Our most recent sweepstakes ended last night, and our widget spat out the randomly chosen winner: Jason Cable of Allen, Texas. I contact Jason, who was understandably excited, and he sent along this photo and description of his fishing life:
My father enrolled us in fly fishing school in Boise, Idaho, and my twin and I were hooked! Because my folks didn’t know if we would stick with it, they bought us cheap rods at a “big box” store. We learned to throw them, and then my dad invested in a couple Orvis Green Mountain rods. We used those for several years and enjoyed fishing in Idaho, then in Wisconsin and Michigan after we moved to Chicago. When we graduated high school, my parents bought us each an Orvis Superfine rod, the finest rod I had ever thrown by a mile. I’ve been using that Superfine since 1996 and have caught many fish on it. I kept my Green Mountain rod and have taken the opportunity to use it as a loaner rod. I have several friends who are now fly fishing because of it.
I go to the White River in Bull Shoals, Arkansas, often, and I have been learning to target big brown trout with a guide named Steve Dally. The fish above was caught during last year’s hopper season. Steve asked if we wanted quantity or just to target browns, and I replied that I wanted to catch browns. He asked me throughout the day if I had changed my mind, since the fishing was slow, and I replied, “No.” Then I caught this beauty!
Jason has chosen a 9-foot, 5-weight Mid-Flex Helios 2.
