Here is your daily #MomentofChill, featuring a stunning Calliope hummingbird, filmed by Trey Mullen of Brush Creek Ranch.
The Calliope hummingbird (Selasphorus calliope) is the smallest bird in the United States, measuring just three inches in length and weighing about as much as a ping-pong ball. The species inhabits the Rocky Mountains from British Columbia south to Baja, nesting as high as 10,000 feet above sea level. In winter, they migrate south to Mexico and Central America.
A hummingbird can beat its wings up to 80 times per second, and its heart can beat more than 1,000 times per minute. Contrary to popular belief, hummingbirds don’t suck nectar from plants, but lap it up with their forked tongues. Check out this little guy’s tongue flicking in and out!
We believe in the power of nature to replenish our spirit and restore balance to our lives. That’s why, each day through Christmas Day, we will post a “Moment of Chill”—a short video that will transport you to a place where you don’t have to do anything but watch, enjoy, and breathe.
