Size isn’t everything. Native trout display some spectacular colors.

As part of my “20 September Days” project, I’ve been getting out at lunchtime to fish the gorgeous mountain stream just five minutes from Orvis HQ in southwestern Vermont. In recent days, I have been catching mostly browns in the lower river, which suggested that perhaps the brookies were moving upstream in preparation for the spawn. So today, I drove a little higher up the mountain, and sure enough, caught only brook trout. The colors on the last fish were simply stunning, from the brilliant orange belly to the red-and-blue dots.
beautiful brookie!
I note you didn’t say “lunch hour”
I am always left astonished gazing at brook trout…
