Check out the sea lice on the gill plate of this fresh-from-the-ocean Atlantic salmon.

This is one of my favorite shots from my week at the Norwegian Flyfisher’s Club, on the Gaula River of Norway, and I didn’t even catch this fish. It was the first Atlantic salmon caught while we were there, landed by John Hoagland, of Salt Lake City. Those strange brown things on the fish’s gill plates are sea lice, which means that the fish had been in fresh water for just a few hours.
