Photos of the Day: Timing Is Everything

It wasn’t much, but this little trout was a sign of success for Jay, after a long dry spell.

I had a few hours free after work last week and asked my friend Jay if he wanted to fish the local stream. Jay has been a bit down on his luck the past few times he has been on the water, and I was hoping to help him get the skunk off. The night before we were meeting up, a nice rainstorm rolled through, and all I could think was, “Great, the water will be up and off color, and Jay might get another skunk.”

The small Colorado creek was running high.

Luckily that didn’t happen and he was ecstatic to finally catch his first fish of the year. I was the one with the skunk that day.

A couple days later, Jon got in on the action, and he wished Jay had been there.

But two days later, when the flow lowered and the water was clearer, I was able to pull some amazing browns out of the small creek. Just don’t let Jay find out that he missed the big ones by a couple of days!

This is a fine brown for such a small stream.

Recent Trout Bum of the Week Jon Hill lives in Littleton, Colorado and works in the digital-graphics field. But he spends almost all his spare time chasing trout in the high country, and his photos have been featured many times on the Orvis News.
