Photos: Week One of The “20 September Days” Contest

My first week has been an all-solo affair, mostly chasing brookies in mountain tributaries.

It’s Day 8 of our “20 September Days” Photo Contest, and since “thirty days hath September,” you could start today and still complete the challenge. How are you doing so far? I’m in good shape, having fished every day but one so far, focusing on brook trout in our mountain streams. We are in a pretty good drought, but I’m hoping that things on the Battenkill will pick up before the month ends.

It’s still not too late for you to get in on the action. You don’t need to hit 20 days to take part; all we’re looking for is a good effort at getting out as often as you possibly can. Heck you can fish one day this month and still enter the photo contest. At the end of the month, we’re picking three winners and offering some killer prizes, including a Helios 3 Fly Rod.

Below are ten great shots from the first week of the month on Instagram. (There are lots on Facebook, too, but they’re harder to share.) We look forward to seeing hundreds more! Leave a comment telling us how many days you’ve managed so far.

Day 6: lord of the creek. I worked like a dog last winter while looking forward to finally visiting the Shenandoah NP trout water. Just when the mayflies were about to hatch, COVID shut down the Park. I was crushed. After a couple months Skyline Drive opened, but the border (lower) access remained closed. So if I wanted to fish, I had to start at the headwaters. Since I fish upstream this meant hiking down 2-3 miles. The last thing I wanted to do after a hard day of fishing was hump 2 miles back to the parking, uphill. But the fishing more than made up for it. Through half a dozen streams I came across only 2 other streamlashers and never had to follow anybody. Also got in pretty good shape! After waiting out the hot weather I am going back to some of creeks I had to pass up. #orvisflyfishing #20sepdays #localslam #brooktrout #shenandoahnationalpark #flyfishingphotography #flyfishing #flyfishva #flyfishingnation #flyfishingart #flyfisherman #creek #nationalpark #orvis_downtown_roanoke #homewaters #catchandrelease #troutbum #troutfishing #trout #troutflyfishing #nativetrout #underwaterphotography #underwater #trailsetter #roanoke #roanokeoutside #roanokeva #flyfishvirginia
