Take an ALL-NEW Orvis Fly-Fishing Trivia Challenge 09.29.22

Our sorta-twice-monthly(?) trivia challenge is back, with Assistant Editor Evan Jones serving as Quiz Master from now on. Every so often, Evan will test your knowledge of all things fly fishing. Remember that this is trivia, not a litmus test for what every angler should know. I’m going to warn you that this challenge–all about famous anglers and authors–is a tough one. Get ready to learn.

The last quiz was another tough one, and there was just a single perfect score. Everybody give it up for Roger. (Regular viewers of the Monday Tom Rosenbauer tying sessions know Roger well.) Five others scored 90%, although one of them admitted to doing some Googling. The most common score dropped one notch to 60%.

The winner of this week’s random drawing will receive a Bent Rod Badge Hat, which, which features a brim made with 100% recycled fishing nets, keeping our oceans cleaner. This is a new hat in our ever-changing collection of cool lids. All you have to do to enter is post your score below!

The winner of that late-November quiz (as determined by the random.org) is the awesomely named Chadmon Householder, whose score was passable, but not something to tell mom about. No matter; he still gets the hat.

Don’t forget to post your score in the comments to be eligible to win a hat!

  1. 80%, darn, I knew Joe Brooks was a regular on The American Sportsman, but I didn’t know he started on Wide World of Sports. Since Ted Williams was a famous angler and fly fisherman, as well as a Hall of Fame baseball star, I incorrectly guessed, Ted.

    1. Darn again. Why can’t they make TV shows like The American Sportsman any more. Maybe it’s just nostalgia, or my advanced age, but although internet videos (Thanks, Orvis) are great for instructing technique, they often don’t show the human side of fishing. I really enjoyed Bing Crosby and his sidekick (oh, what’s his name? I’ll remember as soon as I hit the reply button) ad lib singing along with the casting and the catching on The American Sportsman.

I still remember QB Terry Bradshaw being pulled out of the flats boat by a tarpon in the Keys!

      1. Aha! That was Phil Harris who was the voice of Baloo in Disney’s The Jungle Book. I thought the name was Harris, but I did have to look it up on Wikipedia (thanks, internet)

  2. 30%. I think there should be a quiz where Lefty Kreh is the correct answer to every single question. Or Tom Rosenbauer, or Joe Humphries, etc. Maybe an April Fools quiz.

  3. 70% – Excellent for me.

I knew April and Hilary but not the presidents or flycasters.

Yes, the mature flyfisher s among us remember the classic episode of The American Sportsman with Bing Crosby and Phil Harris. Orvis should obtain it for the Friday videos so we can sing-along.
