Take an All-New Phil Monahan Fly-Fishing Trivia Challenge 01.23.14

Welcome to another edition of our trivia challenge, where we test your knowledge of all things fly fishing and where you might learn a thing or two about this sport we love. This one’s a new quiz with a similar topic as the last one, but this time with an international flair! We’ve got 20 questions on famous fly-fishing waters, salt and fresh, around the world. Of course, there may be other waters with the same names elsewhere, so please choose the most famous one for fly fishers. And I have normalized a few names to keep from giving away the answer.

The last quiz was obviously a tough one, as there were just two perfect scores. Congrats to Tim f and Don. On the other hand, I made an egregious error in the answer for the St. Croix River, so everyone who got that wrong can add five points to their scores. My bad; sorry about that.

The randomly chosen winner of this week’s quiz will receive a super-cool, not-yet-available Helios 2 Buff. (See below.) The winner of our last quiz (as determined by random.org) was TTobey, who didn’t do all that great but still gets the prize.

So, take this week’s quiz, and no matter how well or poorly you do, post your score in the comments below to be eligible to win a cool Buff.

Good luck!

  1. 100% but, i looked every single one up on winkipedia. It was a very educational excercise. I imagine a lot of rivers and streams in Europe have historical importance and I have often wondered about how the two world wars impacted those rivers and lakes and wildlife in general..

  2. 60% – I won’t forget the Soca river in a while… A deep turquoise colour, trout everywhere and you couldn’t tell if the water was 30 centimeters or 3 meters deep it was so pure. And guess what? I didn’t have a rod with me. One of the most frustrating weekends of my life- but an incredibly beautiful country…

  3. Yes I won!
I am living proof even bad scores win at orvis!
Its not Toms book but still awesome.
    Orvis is the best.

And now the bad news…..30%. 🙂

But I only fish Maine so I live a sheltered life…..

  4. 20%. 100% guessing. Having a hard time believing some of the scores posted here. There must be a lot of looking up answers. Maybe I need to change tactics.

  5. Only 45% even if I have been lucky enough to fish a few places listed here. Now on to Ireland then maybe I can get those right next time! Great quiz!

  6. Really enjoyed this quiz. Only scored 35%. Sure would like to improve my future scores by researching some of these locations first hand.

  7. 95% – A few educated guesses and, actually, knew most of the locations. A big improvement from my past sub 50% performances. Got the Limay wrong.
