Take an All-New Phil Monahan Fly-Fishing Trivia Challenge 02.26.15

Welcome to another edition of our trivia challenge, where we test your knowledge of all things fly fishing and where you might learn a thing or two about this sport we love. This one is a doozy, featuring 20 all-new questions about well-known fly fishing rivers.

Warning: For each question, there is a best answer; just because there is another river with the same name somewhere else doesn’t mean it’s the correct answer.

The scores on the last quiz were a big improvement over previous weeks, with six perfect scores. Congrats to Steve B, Ryan Maas, Kurt Jackson, Bill W, Steve Root, and especially to Steve Van Vleet, who did it two weeks in a row! The number of 90% scores tripled, to 18. The most common score was 70%. Nice work, y’all.

The randomly chosen winner of this week’s quiz will receive a year’s subscription to Catch Magazine. Our last winner (as determined by random.org) was Spenny, who came so close, scoring 90%.

So, take this week’s quiz, and no matter how well or poorly you do, post your score in the comments below to be eligible to win!

Good luck!

  1. 80% Wow, I guessed at half. You hear about all these rivers, but to place them in tough.
Too many rivers, too little time! I’d love to fish them, but sadly it pasted my time!

      1. “The “falling” river that the name Fall River refers to is the Quequechan River (pronounced “quick-a-shan” by locals) which flows through the city, dropping steeply into the bay.”

  2. I only scored 10%. One quick note. The AuSable river is in NY not the Ausable. I know I live there and it is my home water. I guess I will have to travel more to learn the rest of the rivers. Great quiz. Thanks.

    1. The “falling” river that the name Fall River refers to is the Quequechan River (pronounced “quick-a-shan” by locals) which flows through the city, dropping steeply into the bay.

  3. 25%…new to the sport and look forward to learning about these rivers. The Davidson is my favorite so far and is about an hour from my home.

  4. 70% but I made two careless errors. Sorry Phil, but despite my granite state pride I am going to have to side with the other folks on Fall River, MA. I thought it was a trick question because you didn’t refer to it as “The Fall River”.
Thanks for putting these together. I alwayslook forward to them.

  5. 85%…I lucked out with some major W.A.G.’s… I didn’t know many of those. The river in the pic looks like the Lochsa in Idaho.

  6. 95 %. . Actually a fairly easy quiz, especially when you read lots of articles written by Phil Monahan and others who are in the industry.

  7. 45%. Really should have been 50. I’ve fished the Brazos and just clicked to wrong box. No excuses for the other 10 I missed.

  8. 70%

The Fall River vs. Fall River is like helping your Uncle Jack off a…..well, never mind.
    Thanks for the fun quiz!!!

      1. True! a hasty decision to answer with the city. Truth is, I didn’t know there was a Fall River river… sounds like a pretty cool spot though! Thanks for the challenge Phil!

  9. 75% is better than expected, but I missed the Ausable, thinking it was the Au Sable. Duh. And I’ve fished both of them! Doh!

  10. 40%. I really need to fish more territories. I did well for the New England and Midwest rivers, but the southern/southeast and west rivers took me to school.
