Take an All-New Phil Monahan Fly-Fishing Trivia Challenge 12.04.14

Welcome to another edition of our trivia challenge, where we test your knowledge of all things fly fishing, and where you might learn a thing or two about this sport we love. We skipped a week for Thanksgiving, but we’re back with 10 new questions—all of them about the book and movie versions of Norman Maclean’s A River Runs Through It—to tease your brain. So if you haven’t read the book or seen the movie, you might wanna do so before you take the quiz.

The scores on the last Trivia Challenge were pretty low, with NO perfect scores. There were just three folks who scored 90%: congrats to Bob, Josh E, and Cade. Most folks were in the 40%-60% range.

The randomly chosen winner of this week’s quiz will receive a copy of Scott Sanchez’s book The Never-Ending Stream: A Tribute to Fly-Tying Form and Function, which profiles twenty of the luminary artists whose contributions to fly tying are legend, along with drawings, recipes, and gorgeous photos of their flies. The winner of our last quiz (as determined by random.org) was Patrick, whose posted score was followed by “boo.” But now he’s saying, “Yay.”

So, take this week’s quiz, and no matter how well or poorly you do, post your score in the comments below to be eligible to win some great stickers for your car, boat, guitar, or whatever you want.

Good luck!

  1. 80%!! Whoo hooo! Finally got a decent score. Only scored well because I just rewatched the movie and did some online research about Mr. Maclean.

    Thanks for the quiz!

  2. 60 percent. Great quiz! Young Men and Fire was incredible–disturbing, but incredible. Thanks for bringing it to the forefront of my memory.

  3. 50%. Couldn’t remember the brother’s name, which is the same as my birth name, but remembered what kind of fly he caught the giant trout on. Priorities, you know.

  4. Ok, here we go 40%, but….. I like to spend my free time angling not memorizing movies/books, no matter how good they are. So I will stick to this comment with all my heart, any one who knows “The Movie” better than they know entomology, or how to build a leader, or how to swing a soft hackle, or how to cast a dry fly, or how to dry fly drop, or how to czech nymph (which yes, to you purest is fly fishing), or how to build/repair a rod, or how to shadow cast, should probably stick to watching the movie and stay in the easy chair. Just my thoughts…………..

  5. 40%. didn’t read the movie but saw the movie a couple of times – educated guesses with
several toss-ups that did not go my way. thanks.

  6. 100% for me! Read the book and watched the movie several times over the years. I also love trivia. I’m full of useless knowledge.
