Take an All-New Phil Monahan Fly-Fishing Trivia Challenge 12.05.13

Welcome to another edition of our trivia challenge, where we test your knowledge of all things fly fishing and where you might learn a thing or two about this sport we love. This one’s got 10 new questions that range from famous fly tiers to trout anatomy to rivers of note.

The last quiz was certainly more difficult than the one before, as we dropped from fifty-one perfect scores to just five. Congratulations to our A+ students: John Zimmer, Wes Atkinson, An D., Mark West, and Sharp Hook. By the way, nobody noticed that I put the wrong date in the headline last time. D’oh.

The randomly chosen winner of this week’s quiz will receive a signed copy of Tom’s book The Orvis Guide to Small Stream Fly Fishing. The last book winner (as determined by random.org) was Pete Hawes, who scored a very respectable 80%.

So, take this week’s quiz, and no matter how well or poorly you do, post your score in the comments below to be eligible to win Tom’s book with his inspirational words on the title page.

Good luck!

  1. 50%. So does that mean I got half of them right, or did I get half of them wrong? I’m still scratching my head over this one.

  2. 60%, that was a tough one but always learn something new! Southeastern Oregon is also part of the native range of Lahontan cutthroat trout; ODFW is currently trying to re-introduce and increase existing populations.

    1. From historian Andrew Herd: “At Walton’s request, Cotton wrote his celebrated second part of the Compleat Angler two years after the completion of the fishing house. The work was the first detailed treatise on fly fishing, appearing in the fifth edition of the Compleat Angler. . .”

  3. Another great, educational quiz, Mr. Monahan. Only 50% and a couple on lucky guesses.

When do we get the ’80s punk bands, quiz?

  4. 70% Apparently I don’t follow presidential fishing trips, ghost writers, and I missed a fly reel by a decade! Otherwise, 4 known answers and 3 guesses got me 70%
