Take a Classic Phil Monahan Fly-Fishing Trivia Challenge 03.23.17

Welcome to the latest edition of our weekly trivia challenge, in which we test your knowledge of all things fly fishing and where you might learn a thing or two about this sport we love. This week, we’ve got a classic quiz featuring twenty (20!) questions about fly patterns.

The last quiz was apparently difficult, although there were two perfect scores, doubling the previous week’s total. Golf claps for Bradw and Stephen Fitch. Just five people scored 90%, a precipitous drop-off from the previous twelve. The most common score also dropped, to 50%, and the most missed question revealed that just 22% of you knew that the Kvichak River flows out of Lake Iliamna.

The winner of this week’s random drawing will receive an Eastern Trout Spring Selection, featuring eight time-tested dry flies and nymphs. (Trust me: they’ll work anywhere trout swim.)

The winner of our last quiz (as determined by random.org), and recipient of this great video was Matthew Arledge, who will not be bragging about his score–but he gets the prize anyway.

So post your score below for a chance to win a video that will help you become a better nymph fisherman.

Good luck!

  1. I guessed or somewhat knowledgeably guessed 45% correct out of a selection 100% of which I have never fished. And incorrectly guessed flymph yet again!

  2. 100% Fly pattern quizzes are always my favorite because I tie so much. As always, a fun quiz. 😀

  3. 90%, I missed flymph & hippie stomper. This quiz looks very familiar, if we didn’t have it before we certainly had a lot of the same questions. I’d like to know if I did better this time around.

    1. Uh, it says “Classic” right in the title. Yes, it’s from last year. I checked to see how you did on it before, but you didn’t post a score or didn’t take the quiz.

  4. 80 but the flymph is both a wet and a nymph. Both answers are correct wet and nymph

  5. 65% might have to contest what a flymph is. Pete Hidy states it is changing from “wingless nymphs to flies with wings”

  6. 45% I struggle with flies, who tied them, authors, fishing history, rob building, but I excel at biology/geography. This quiz not my forte.

  7. something isn’t right.
I took the quiz. Picked streamer for the Parmechene Belle which it is and it switched it to a wet fly answer when I finished the quiz. Thought you should know
